Work to increase the peace in our communities! Explore the possibility of providing NVC trainings to inmates in Oregon’s prison system. There is overwhelming evidence that those who receive empathy training increase their pro-social behavior, and further evidence that parolees who receive NVC training show an increase in empathy. Inmates taking our trainings report enjoying the changes that occur in all of their relationships including with their families, other inmates, and the correctional officers in prison. Oregon currently spends more on incarceration than on education even though there is overwhelming evidence that every dollar spent on rehabilitation offsets as much as six dollars in social costs. It is possible that we can make a significant contribution to peace and economic stability in our communities by offering our trainings in prisons.
In this workshop we will examine how training in prison is different than training outside. We will explore the challenges trainers experience when training inside and discuss our relationship with the corrections system. We will further explore how volunteers can support the program in other ways. We hope that attendees have already decided to make NVC an operating part of their lives and are willing to develop the skills necessary to providing NVC trainings. Those volunteering will be provided all necessary support for these goals.
